How To Side Chain With A Compressor!

How To Side Chain With A Compressor!

Side chaining is a popular audio processing technique often used in music production to create a rhythmic "pumping" effect or to make space in a mix. Here’s how to set it up:

1. Choose Your Tracks

  • Typically, you'll want to side chain a bass or pad track with a kick drum or another percussive element.

2. Select a Compressor

  • Use a compressor that has a side chain input feature. Most digital audio workstations (DAWs) have built-in compressors that support this.

3. Insert the Compressor

  • Insert the compressor on the track you want to be affected (e.g., the bass or pad).

4. Set Up the Side Chain Input

  • Look for an option labeled “Side Chain” or similar on your compressor. Select the audio source you want to trigger the compression (e.g., the kick drum).
  • In some DAWs, you may need to route the kick drum track to the side chain input of the compressor.

5. Adjust Compressor Settings

  • Threshold: Set the threshold so that the compressor activates when the kick hits.
  • Ratio: A higher ratio (e.g., 4:1 or 8:1) will create a more pronounced effect.
  • Attack and Release:
    • Attack: A fast attack time allows the compressor to respond quickly to the kick.
    • Release: Set the release time to control how quickly the compression releases after the kick. A shorter release will create a more noticeable pumping effect.

6. Fine-Tune

  • Play your track and adjust the compressor settings until you achieve the desired effect. Make sure it complements the overall mix without overwhelming other elements.

7. Listen and Adjust

  • Sometimes, subtle adjustments can make a big difference. Listen to how it interacts with other elements and tweak accordingly.

Tips

  • Experiment: Try side chaining with different sources or varying settings to explore unique effects.
  • Visual Feedback: Use a meter or visual feedback on your compressor to understand how the side chaining is affecting the dynamics.

With practice, you’ll find the best settings for your particular project!
